The Digital Economy Chamber of Uruguay (CEDU) reaffirmed its support to the Financial Inclusion Law and highlighted the new business opportunities that the regulation will generate for the country, by positioning it in a differential way in the region and in the world.

Marcelo Montado, president of CEDU, explained that as the population's assimilation of new forms of digital transactions increases, the attractiveness of the development space for investment, whether local or foreign, will expand.

"The country has the virtue of leading the digital economy at a regional level due to its telecommunications infrastructure, its mature software industry and plans such as Ceibal, which brought the Internet to Uruguayans, or its very high penetration of smartphones with data services. In addition, it has the advantage of being only three million inhabitants with an idiosyncrasy that allows to build bridges between the developed and developing world. All the ingredients are present to explore and test new markets and products, underpinning from there the development of our economy," he said.

On the other hand, Montado referred to the social aspect of digital inclusion, which is related to the democratization of the population's access to the new systems.

"We are aware that there are issues to improve, such as tariff asymmetries that may exist to the detriment of small traders, or even aspects of a more philosophical nature, but Uruguay has an enviable opportunity in the new economy and it is the welfare of all Uruguayans that is at stake. We have to be careful not to condition our future to needs or claims, probably fair, but short-range. The State, government, political parties, and organized society in its different expressions, have the enormous responsibility of establishing the bases for the development of the Digital Economy. If there are measures being taken in that direction, let's support them and perfect them. With the speed at which the new economy is developing, we cannot afford the luxury of not advancing faster. That is the way forward," he emphasized.
