The ICT Table: Where is the video game industry heading in Uruguay?

Every day millions of people download video games for their mobile phones from Google and Apple's online stores. And among the most coveted titles have been several developed here in Uruguay.

The clearest example is Kingdom Rush, the tower defence game released by Ironhide Game Studio in 2011, which in less than a year was downloaded 170 million times.

 

But the list does not end there. Every year, more Uruguayan games are added that surpass the one million download mark by far, proving that this sector is a thriving one.

 

What are the prospects for this sector, and is it possible to have a world-class industry in this sector? We talked to four protagonists of the video game industry in Uruguay.

 

We were joined by: Gonzalo Frasca, Bachelor in Communication Sciences, Master in Information Sciences and Technology and Ph. in video games; Adriana Bentancor, public accountant, advisor to the National Directorate of Telecommunications and Audiovisual Communication Services of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining; Gerson Da Silva, Lead Game Designer at Ironhide Games, game scriptwriter, Mentor invited by Google at the Indie Game Accelerator in Singapore; and Gabriel Vainsencher, Bachelor in Business Administration and graduate of the video game development course at A+.
