Reading time: 2 minutes

"It is a rather technical event, but we are looking for this to have an impact on the Internet in the region and obviously in the lives of Latin Americans," Oscar Robles, executive director of the Internet Address Registry for Latin America and the Caribbean (Lacnic), one of the organizers, told Efe today.

The idea of this meeting, which will end next Friday and whose organization also involves Antel and the Agency for Electronic Government and Information Society and Knowledge (Agesic) of that country, is to address the issues of the moment: security, privacy, IPv6 deployment and governance.

Some of the challenges to be addressed in this event are referred to the "internet in the region, cybersecurity, network growth and access to all people" through forums and discussions in which it is decided what works and what is discarded, said Robles.

The event will be attended by the president of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), Steve Crocker, and cybersecurity expert Paul Twomey, promoter of the Cybergreen Initiative, among others.

Crocker will speak on innovation and the future of the network, while Twomey will speak on how governments could address market failures and significantly improve the health of the cyber ecosystem.

Along with the two of them, other leaders arrived in the Uruguayan capital to analyze the impact of the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean and the new threats to cybersecurity.

This event will be held as part of the celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of Lacnic, the organization responsible for the allocation and administration of Internet number resources in Latin America and the Caribbean, which is based in Montevideo.

Robles stressed that the celebration of a twenty-fifth edition "gives an idea of the strength of the organization", not only in terms of public participation, which has been increasing, but because it has become a "more active community, with different initiatives, different technical forums and different parallel initiatives".

"We are always looking to have resolutions that help us make that fine tuning to the operational challenges that networks have today, that help us generate collaborative initiatives to solve cybersecurity issues, for example," Robles said.

The event will also have a space for the Internet Society (Isoc) on the future of the Internet as part of the celebration of its 25th anniversary.

Isoc will present a panel discussion on whether all segments of society will have equal opportunities to meaningfully participate in and benefit from the Internet.

Taking advantage of the event, Agesic and Lacnic will organize a hackathon for network operators to work with programmers and other users in the development of innovative tools.

As one of the highlights, a Uruguayan will receive the 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award.

This distinction will recognize an outstanding personality of the Internet community for his or her contribution to the development of the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean.
