"Without good science, technology and innovation it is not possible to make the leap to development".

Vázquez spoke on Monday, July 31, at the ceremony celebrating the tenth anniversary of the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII), which took place at the Solís Theater, where he recalled the figure of Líber Seregni, who died on July 31, 12 years ago, and said that "without good science, technology and innovation it is not possible to make the leap to the development that Uruguay deserves and that Uruguayans want"."It is a long process that requires perseverance and patience, but that demands decisions, immediate actions and resources," said the head of state, recalling that ten years ago the Frente Amplio government proposed a series of initiatives grouped into four main areas: "An institutional design favorable to innovation; a strategic plan for science, technology and innovation; the promotion of education, research and innovation; and the promotion of investment, financing and evaluation of results.

Tasks accomplished

"From the government we fulfilled with the creation of the ANII. We accomplished the creation of a National System of Researchers that today brings together 1,700 scientists, experts and technicians," he remarked. He also said that the government accomplished "the creation of a National System of Scholarships that in a decade benefited 3,500 young professionals who studied masters, doctorates and post-doctorates in Uruguay and abroad. We accomplished the development of 'Timbó', a portal of universal and free access to the latest specialized bibliography of various disciplines, which has 40,000 users. Uruguay is the first country in the world to have a service of these characteristics, to everyone's pride," said Vázquez. Another of the aspects he highlighted was the development and approval of a Strategic Plan for Science, Technology and Innovation, "as well as collaborating with innovation processes in some twenty public and private organizations. He also supported "more than 700 innovation projects in all sectors of the economy and more than 480 innovative enterprises, promoting the creation of five technology centers to bring together scientific and technological capabilities with the aim of generating innovations, promoting the Nova Contest, which in six editions awarded more than 40 innovative initiatives with real impact.
