"We are going to start studying the installation of a binational technology park" in Rivera in September, said Rodolfo Silveira, adviser to the Technological University (UTEC).
"In 2019 we are going to have a strategic plan, or not, to develop a technology park in Rivera that involves a global bi-national growth; that involves university, knowledge, companies and genuine value creation in the region," Silveira told De Siembra.
"This project is one of the most important challenges we have as a country and as a university," considering that "there are no more than four or five successful examples in the world," he said.
Silveira explained that they already have the support of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). "They have reinforced confidence in us, and we like that," he said.
Now they are thinking of adding public and private support. "We are going to include all those who are willing to join this proposal," he said.
Currently, the institution is starting the construction of a technological educational center also in Rivera, where, due to the particularity of the border city, it is working in partnership with educational institutions on the Brazilian side.
In this city, through UTEC, it is now possible to study logistics and industrial mechatronics, related to the production of its area of influence.
"The technological universities in the world are very close to the productive sectors and the social realities of the region," explained Silveira.
On the other hand, he highlighted the increase in the number of UTEC students, which went from 44 in 2014 to 1,000 in 2017; "all in the interior of the country, pursuing university careers".
"The increase in enrollment is a very good sign for Uruguay, not for UTEC," said the head of the institution.
