In this sense, we call to renew and strengthen the commitment of all people in favour of women's rights and gender equality:
1. 8M regional campaign:
This 8th March, the aim is once again to recognise the achievements of women in the world, but above all to highlight the road that remains to be travelled to achieve substantive equality between men and women.
The priority theme of the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women in March 2021 is "Women's full and effective participation and decision-making in public life". To this end, the UN Secretary General produced a comprehensive report1 which shows that change at the global level has been gradual and that women are currently still under-represented in public life and decision-making.
Uruguay has received observations and recommendations from the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW/UN) regarding the low representation of women and the scarcity of measures to ensure women's full participation in decision-making. Furthermore, it is worth noting that women's participation in decision-making and leadership positions has become one of the most relevant indicators of the Sustainable Development Agenda. It is globally recognised that women's full and equal participation is essential to achieve gender equality and drive progress towards sustainable development.
This year the aim is to disseminate and share the central and essential role that women play in the different spheres of society.
2. Event Ring the Bell for gender equality - Ring the Bell for gender equality:
According to the International Finance Corporation, 7 per cent of private equity and venture capital investment in emerging markets is invested in women-led businesses and only 25 per cent of investor partners in investment entities are women.
To make this reality visible, aggravated by the global pandemic of COVID-19, and to work to change it: next Friday, March 5th at 10 a.m., the event "Ring The Bell for gender equality" will take place, an international meeting held in collaboration with more than 90 stock exchanges around the world, in the framework of International Women's Day. This is the seventh edition globally, and the second edition in Uruguay. The event is co-organised by the Montevideo Stock Exchange, the IDB Group and the programme "WIN-WIN-WIN: Gender Equality is Good Business" (an alliance of UN Women, ILO and EU).
The event can be followed via streaming by registering in advance at the following LINK: http://bit.ly/toquedecampana
3. The Gender and Intersectionality Webinar Series:
A cycle of four meetings will be held to present the main concepts of gender and its intersectionalities in an agile and concrete way. Intersectionality refers to the interaction between gender, race, class, disability and other categories of differentiation in people's lives, in social practices, in institutions, in the market and in companies. The concept addresses the issue of exclusion, seeking to understand the interconnectedness between the various categories that constitute multiple forms of discrimination.
These webinars will share tools and good business practices to address different intersectionalities. For example, how are companies incorporating women with disabilities in their different departments, how have some companies supported inclusion policies for migrant women, or how are women of African descent being impacted by career plans and access to leadership positions in companies? Or how women of African descent are being impacted by career plans and access to leadership positions in companies?
The first webinar in the series "Technological tools for unbiased corporate management" will address the unconscious biases that operate when managing with an intersectional gender approach. It will be followed by a presentation of new technological tools that support companies in managing without bias and finally, a business case study on the experience of using such tools will be presented.
It will take place on Thursday 11 March at 9:00 am and is organised in partnership with PwC, SAP and ADPUGH. We invite you to register to participate and spread the word: http://bit.ly/cicloweps
4. Launch of the publication "The place of Uruguayan women in decision-making positions":
INMUJERES and UN Women, in the framework of the Win-Win Programme, carried out a new diagnosis on The Place of Uruguayan Women in Decision-Making Positions 2021, based on two precedents from 2011 and 2016, which allows for a comparative analysis of the evolution of the situation.
This report addressed one of those aspects that cannot be postponed in order to consolidate gender equality: the concentration of power and, in particular, the low representation of women in decision-making and leadership positions that are relevant to the development of democracy, such as academia, political leadership, business chambers, social and trade union organisations, among others.1 As a general conclusion, this document reveals the persistent vertical segregation in women's access to power, as well as the existence of horizontal segregation. This is both because women have less access to leadership positions and because of the issues in which they are considered for leadership.
The presentation of the report will take place on 18 March at 6 p.m. in Parliament.
5. Recognition of companies: "Talent has no gender" award
We invite all those companies that have been promoting different inclusion policies and management initiatives with a gender perspective to apply for the 2nd edition of the Talent has no gender award. The objectives of the award are to recognise the progress made by companies in Uruguay in the field of gender equality and labour complementarity. At the same time, it seeks to encourage good practices, behaviours and business policies that promote gender equality at all levels of the company.
