Reading time: 2 minutes

It will occupy 3,000 square meters, of which 70% will be for academic use, and the remaining 30% for common use with other study centers. Logistics and Industrial Mechatronics are some of the most demanded careers, among others that are planned to be incorporated.

Last Friday the 18th, education authorities laid the foundation stone of the Northern Regional Technological Institute of the Technological University (UTEC), which is part of the project of the first Higher Education Pole installed in the department of Rivera, which will share land and, in many cases, facilities with the Universidad del Trabajo del Uruguay (UTU), the University of the Republic (Udelar) and the Council for Training in Education (CFE).

This educational center, which is in the first phase of construction, has more than 3,000 square meters, of which 70% will be for academic use, and the remaining 30% for common use of all institutions. Currently, UTU has two degree programs for 50 students each: Logistics Engineering and Industrial Mechatronics Technology, but there are plans to add more courses. It is projected that the generation of students entering in 2018 will do so in the new premises.

A determining factor in the decision to set up in Rivera was the significant demand for tertiary education in the area, both at university level and for technologists and technicians, in a variety of fields including logistics, wood industrialization, renewable energies, environment, tourism, administration and foreign trade. UTEC presented the winning project of the architectural competition for the construction of the Instituto del Norte. According to what was explained by the team of architects, the strategy for the design of the building was to establish the classrooms on the lower floor, the basement and the upper sector, and to free the rest of the space for the common areas, such as the cafeteria, virtual library and connectivity sector, elevators, stairs and corridors. In this way, a large central space that will bring together all the students of the educational center is achieved.
